Measurement and analysis of data and information that exists in an organization is vital to both effectively manage an organization and to identify and prioritize cost-effective and appropriate opportunities for improvement. This module addresses key elements to identify the most appropriate metrics and what to do with them. It focuses on the benefits of a systematic approach to measurements and analysis.

Learning Objectives

Participants will benefit from this module in understanding how measurements are vital to understanding the performance of an organization and how they link all the different functions/departments together. By the end of the course, the participants will:

  • Identify the major elements in an effective Measurement and Analysis System

  • Recognize the role and importance of selecting the "right" metrics

  • See how cross-functional involvement is fundamental to selecting and using metrics across the organization.

  • See how a systematic approach to measurement can integrate the organization

 

Course Content

The Measurement Analysis Course focuses on the value to an organization of identifying and effectively using appropriate metrics to understand an organization’s performance and to prioritize improvement opportunities to determine the most efficient and cost-effective improvements.

 

The course outline includes:

  • Key elements of a Measurement System

  • Excellence indicators of a good Measurement System

  • How to identify things that could/should be measured in your processes

  • Examples of world-class Measurement Systems

  • How to use metrics to identify opportunities for improvement

  • Some basic analytical tools for understanding data

  • Some approaches to prioritizing improvement opportunities

 

The course tools include:

  • Elements of an effective measurement system

  • The SIPOC process model

  • Analysis tools such as Root Cause, Pareto, Data Stratification, "Ask Why 5 Times", Cause-and-Effect Diagrams, and Scatter-Plots

  • Prioritization tools such as Matrix Diagram, Cost analysis of defects, Action Planning, PDSA/PDCA

  • Balanced Scorecard

  • KPI (Key Process Indicators)

  • Dashboards
